Effective date: March 28, 2026  ·  Last updated: April 10, 2026

The short version: Marquee does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Your watchlist lives on your device and syncs via your personal iCloud account. We never see it.

Overview

Marquee ("the app", "we", "us") is a personal movie tracking app for iPhone. This privacy policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, and what stays entirely on your device.

We are committed to privacy by design. The app was built with the explicit goal of never requiring an account, never operating a server, and never collecting personal information.

Data We Do Not Collect

We do not operate any servers or databases. We do not collect:

  • Your name, email address, or any contact information
  • Your watchlist, movie preferences, or viewing history
  • Your location or country
  • Device identifiers or IP addresses linked to you
  • Any personally identifiable information of any kind

Data Stored on Your Device

All app data is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This includes:

  • Movies you have added to your watchlist
  • Names of people who recommended movies to you
  • Personal notes you attach to movies
  • Your watched/unwatched status for each movie
  • Your notification and app preferences

You can delete all app data at any time by removing the app from your device.

iCloud Sync

If you have iCloud enabled on your device, your watchlist will sync across your Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit infrastructure. This sync is:

  • Encrypted end-to-end by Apple
  • Stored in your personal iCloud account, inaccessible to us
  • Governed by Apple's iCloud Privacy Policy, not ours
  • Optional: the app functions fully offline without iCloud

We have no access to your iCloud data and cannot read, modify, or retrieve it.

Third-Party APIs

Marquee fetches movie metadata (titles, posters, release dates, ratings) from two third-party services. These are read-only requests: we send a movie title or ID and receive public information back.

  • TMDB (The Movie Database): movie search, posters, release dates. Your searches are subject to TMDB's privacy policy at themoviedb.org.
  • OMDb (Open Movie Database): IMDB ratings and scores. Subject to OMDb's privacy policy at omdbapi.com.

Neither service receives personal information from you via Marquee. API requests do not include your name, account, or device identity.

Analytics & Diagnostics

Marquee uses Firebase (by Google) to collect anonymous diagnostic and usage data. This helps us identify crashes and understand which features are used. The following data is collected:

  • Crash Data: crash reports and non-fatal errors, collected via Firebase Crashlytics. Not linked to your identity.
  • Performance Data: app start time, network latency, and screen render times, collected via Firebase Performance Monitoring. Not linked to your identity.
  • Product Interaction: anonymised events such as screen views and feature usage (e.g. "movie added", "search performed"), collected via Firebase Analytics. No personal information is included in these events.

None of this data is linked to your identity, shared with advertisers, or used for targeted advertising. Firebase is subject to Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.

Notifications

Marquee uses two types of notifications:

  • Cinema release alerts: scheduled entirely on your device using Apple's local notification system. No push server is involved. These fire when a watchlisted movie opens in cinemas based on a daily background check.
  • Developer broadcast messages: occasional app-level announcements (e.g. major updates) sent via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). To receive these, the app registers a device token with Google's FCM service on launch. This token is not linked to your identity and is not shared with any third party beyond Google. FCM is subject to Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.

You can disable all notifications at any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Marquee.

Children's Privacy

Marquee does not collect any personal data from anyone, including children under 13. The app complies with COPPA and GDPR-K requirements by virtue of collecting no data whatsoever.

Changes to This Policy

If we ever update this privacy policy, the new version will be published at this URL with an updated effective date. We will not make changes that involve collecting personal data without clear notice.
